The Job Hunt: Fresh Employment

Aviation Systems of NWFL

Aviation Systems of NWFL

After being back in Pensacola for about seven months, I have finally been hired to a new sheet metal job.  The long wait is now over, and I can resume my work as a sheet metal technician.  I am now employed by a local company, Aviation Systems of Northwest Florida.  They specialize in the manufacture of training simulators for all the service branches.  I will get on aircraft experience with various airframes ranging from fighters, to helicopters to cargo planes.  They take airframes that once flew, and turn them into training platforms for maintainers, air crews and pilots.  They also make training implements ranging from in classroom console modules to building designed to recreate conditions on board naval vessels.

This is an outstanding opportunity for me to expand my technical skill and experience and I am looking forward to my first day.  The plan is to start on November 9, 2009 bright and early at 7 am.

I am still gathering various details about the company as well as things like my specific duties, benefits, uniforms, tools and the like.

This is a very exciting time for me, and I hope that it will bring with it a long term career.

I leave behind the place that gave me a job during bad economic times, Circle K.  They were good to me, and I hope they feel that I made a good addition to their crew.  I wish all the best to the crew of Circle K #4727 in the future. Thanks!

Holy crapy schedule Batman! Plus, updates

August 29, 2009 Leave a comment

Seven to three, three to eleven… eleven to seven. Sounds like a normal series of shifts for a 24 hour business. Up until this week, that is pretty much what we at the Circle K had grown too. Now, my schedule, in fact all our schedules are rather topsy terby. Instead of going in for my normal third shift tonight, I get to work 5 hours or the second shift; 4 pm to 9 pm. Then I have the privilege of going in tomorrow morning at 8 am and working all day until 4 pm. After that craziness, I go back to third shift for the rest of the week. Does this sound like a bit of a rant to you? Well it is. I am mean come on! Working the third shift is bad enough as it is. I work in the middle of the night, and then as a result, it becomes very difficult for me to a a sense of normality durning my off time. Sure, the work load is awesome compared to the stress of a gazillion customers during second shift, but not having what would be considered a normal day off really gets to me. So when you take that into account, and then through into the mix two days of an odd ball schedule, that makes for a very unhappy camper. I really hope that this is just a one week deal, because if my boss expects me to do this week in and week out, she might have to start looking for a new clerk.

Moving along, I have been working on my website a lot, and will be ready to launch www.DANIELVINING.com Version 8.0 soon. I am working with my hosting provider Lunarpages on a couple issues at the moment. I have a spiffy WordPress.org template from Skinpress that I want to use, and I am excited to start tinkering with it.

I am also working on my other side project, CoverCast. It will be a site dedicated to cover songs found on the video sharing website YouTube.com. I am a big fan of cover songs, and I look forward to sharing these videos with you through this project. If you have a song you would like to submit to this project, email the YouTube link to me. dcvining@gmail.com

One of the other big things in my life at the moment is L3 Vertex. I applied in the beginning of August, and was interviewed two weeks ago. I still haven’t heard back from them as of yet, so I will be contacting them at the beginning of the week to get a status update on where I stand. Cross your fingers for me guys.

Well that is about it for now. Thanks for reading, listening, and watching. Comments and discussion are always welcome.

Today is Earth Day! Do you do your part…

April 22, 2009 Leave a comment

Today is Earth Day! Do you do your part to lesson the negative impact on the environment? I do, and it’s very simple. Recyle as much as you can, including cans! :) I recycle cans, reuse shopping bags and use canvas bags when I can. I try to run the water as little as possible and do my best to use a paper towel more than twice. Of course there are a course of energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout my families house. I am not perfect, but I do try where I can, and as I go forward I learn new things that I can do to do my part. #Earth Day 2009

I am still having trouble with the implementation of a favicon for www.DANIELVINING.com. It seems to work off and on in Internet Explorer and Firefox. It only works in Google Chrome when I preview the site in that browser. When I try the uploaded live view in Chrome, I get nothing. I have followed the instructions from many different sources including w3.org to no avail. Very frustrating. If anyone can help with this issue, please shoot me an eMail to: dan@danielvining.com. I would be thankful for your help.

I am working very hard on the re-design of www.DANIELVINING.com. I hope to be done with the greater part of that site by the end of the week.

Vista isn’t that bad.

Call me un-educated, or mis-informed. Call me naive, or ignorant. Call me what you will. I just don’t see the problems with Windows Vista that everyone else seems to see. I have had a computer with Vista for about eight months and have yet to have any serious concerns. In fact, compared to my 2004 model computer which ran on XP, my new computer is awesome. My old computer was a Geo Metro, and the new one is like a Cadillac. The only complaints I have are centered around the user interface of Vista and Internet Explorer 7. I find the UI to be be rather clunky and unyielding. The orientation and location of items throughtout Vista doesn’t seem to be as user friendly as XP, and moreover, Mac’s OS X. Furthermore, Internet Explorer constantly decides to stop working everytime I have more the ten windows open. This, of course, happens when I am working on a large project and need all of those windows. I think I will switch to Fire Fox before all is said and done. Overall, however, I have not had the compatiblity problems or driver issues, or crashes that I expected to have to tackle. I think that maybe I benifited from waiting a year after its initial release. Most of the serious bugs, that I can tell, have been worked out. That said, I think my future lies in the intergration of running Vista in a virtural machine within Mac OS X.

Finally! My New BoA Card has Arrived!

February 26, 2008 Leave a comment

Bank of America took their sweet time in sending my new debit card. It was set to expire by the end of the month, and had a big crack in it. I checked the mail box everyday for about two weeks. It came just in time for the next round of bills, thank you.
